What do you remember about your first guitar?

The first guitar I got, was built by a relative of mine, it was a great Nylon String Acoustic - I still use it. I remember the sound, but also the feel of the Strings and the Wood on the fingers very lively.

Why do you need music? Can we live without music?

As a way of communicating music is essential.
Another interesting aspect about melodies and sounds is, that listening to a familiar melody makes you feel at home on a very existential level, also music can sometimes express aspects of things that are unknown to the conscious brain.

Which is the main pleasure of the guitar?

Besides the sound appealing to me personally one of the most interesting aspects to me is the fact, that it seems there are countless different approaches to playing it, and a lot of new styles are created by guitarists constantly, it has so many possibilities.

Which work of your own are you most surprised by?

As a composer and musician I have taken part in a collaboration of JazzWerkstatt Wien New Ensemble with the Filmmaker Nikolai Maderthoner - the music was there first and he made the film to it, I was surprised by the outcome, it put a whole new perspective on the music while responding perfectly to the mood, it is also amazing how some of the musical details are pictured.

Where are your roots? What are your influences?

My roots as a kid are mainly classical, my sister is a piano player, so I have been exposed to a lot of piano literature…  Of course there is a lot of other influences  - I wish I knew which of all the stuff I listened to influenced me most, I can say Jimi Hendrix, Joe Zawinul to name two important ones  - I think also personal encounters and playing with musicians like Andreas Schaerer, Martin Eberle, Clemens Salesny, Clemens Wenger, Raphael Preuschl or Rodney Holmes had a big impact on me.

How many guitars do you have? Select only one and tell me why.

I have 4 Electric and two acoustic guitars - I have been playing mostly a Paul Reed Smith Model that I bought about 10 years ago - it has proved reliable in many different situations and has turned out to be in tune with many different instruments - also sonically.

Define the sound you're still looking for, or the sound you'd like to hear.

I sometimes  think of a Hologram and it´s fragile and multidimensional texture.
Also the image and smell of certain Woods comes to my mind when I think of sounds but I guess that comes with playing guitar.

klemens lendl - violin; peter rom - guitar, comp; manu mayr - bass

How would you define the present time in musical terms?

molto prestissimo con dolore

What's the importance of technique in music, in your opinion?

I think in the history of music (and electric guitar) you find a lot of examples where content is more important than virtuosity. In order to get any message across however you need a certain technique  - some techniques require a lot of practice, others are better left alone.

About Blank feat. Rodney Holmes live in Prague
Peter Rom - guitar, Philippine Duchateau - piano, Raphael Preuschl - bass, Rodney Holmes - drums

What is some valuable advice that someone has given to you in the past?

"Try not to learn it"
(I have been lucky  to study with Mick Goodrick years ago. In his books he describes this approach for some of the material, it made me think about practicing and learning in a different way)

What gear do you use?

I use a Vox AC 30 amp from the 60ties, which I got from an Uncle of mine. Playing live I also got used to Fender amps, because a lot of Venues have one - I also have a lot of different stomp boxes, Strymon Reverb, Clyde Wah Wah, or Octave Fuzz for example.

What artist, living or dead,  would you like to have collaborated with?

Franz Kafka, Richard Strauss, Fausto Romitelli, Thelonius Monk, Tom Waits, Meshell Ndegeocello, Bob Marley, Larry David, Karl Valentin...

Jazz Ahead 2014: Roma Schaerer Eberle
What are you currently working on?

Personally I am trying to find time to get into playing slide guitar a little bit more.
I am working to write material for the Trio Rom Schaerer Eberle, our third CD coming out next year. I am rehearsing with an Ensemble for an  opera by HK Gruber at Bregenzer Festspiele this summer;  with JazzWerkstatt Wien New Ensemble we are planning a collaboration with "Dorian Concept" taking place this Winter 2014.
