Melodic without notes, rhythmic without a beat, familiar but strange, meticulous but radically free. From a March 2011 performance at Experimental Internedia Foundation, the Lisbon-based composer/performer Rafael Toral plays his Space Studies, exercises in "post-free jazz electronic music" - riddled with paradox, yet full of clarity and space. The concert celebrates his 1994 appearance at the same downtown music loft.
