Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri’s work includes compositions, installations, and performances for sound objects and sound sculptures that she creates herself and in collaboration with Swiss artist Pe Lang. Her work focuses on the production and reception of sound by questioning and transforming the role and function of the instrument as a sound-generator (object as instrument and instrument as object), as well as the type of sound production and behavior of the performer. Through her composition-installation works, such as “Untitled II” and “Solo for motors and resonant body,” she explores the idea of using motor-driven sound props that function both as sound sources and as active preparations (kinetic sound objects) determining the speed, rhythm, dynamics, and other musical parameters. This process encourages the performer to listen proactively and become aware of the possibilities latent between him or her and the instrument. Furthermore, it questions the role of the performer by highlighting the differences between performing, playing, and operating (performing the installation).
Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri is a performer and sound artist. She studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna, and at the Goldsmith College, London, and holds a Ph.D. in composition from the University of California, San Diego. Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri received several prices and awards, such as the Dan David Prize in Contemporary Music, the Berliner Kompositionsstipendium, the Impuls award, the Stipendienpreis Darmstädter Ferienkurse, the University of California San Diego Research Grant, the Robert Erickson Scholarship, and the Kurt Weil Fellowship. Her work has been shown at international venues (in Barcelona, Berlin, Darmstadt, San Francisco, Stuttgart, Tokyo, Utrecht, Vienna, and others) and it has been performed by the Ensemble SurPlus, Klangforum Wien, ensemble mosaik, QNG, amongst others. Marianthi Papalexandri-Alexandri was a composer in residence at the Electronic Music Studio, Stockholm (2007) and a fellow in the field of music / sound at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart (2011/2012).
The symposium “Rhythmanalysis” is initated by Shintaro Miyazaki in collaboration with the art, science & business program of the Akademie Schloss Solitude. It is funded by Andrea von Braun Stiftung and the cogito foundation.
